Character History:
Mabel Pines was born (roughly estimated) on August 31st, 1999 in Piedmont, California, five minutes before her twin brother Dipper, and since then she's been the right brain to his left brain, showing extraordinary talent in art and creative endeavors. Though intelligent in her own way, Mabel excelled primarily in less academic endeavors, making her a foil to her own brother. It's suggested that the two of them, while close, were never as close as they were during the summer they spent in Gravity Falls, due to them having more freedom at home to go their own way (and the fact that when they're in familiar situations, they don't feel compelled to rely on one another as much).
In the summer of 2012, Mabel and Dipper were sent to stay with their Great Uncle (Grunkle) Stan in Gravity Falls, Oregon, where they would find themselves living in their Grunkle's tourist trap "the Mystery Shack." As Mabel tended to look on the bright side of everything, she found these new arrangements to be enjoyable and poured all of her energy into trying to find the perfect summer romance. Unfortunately, Mabel's aggressive flirting techniques left something to be desired. Not daunted, she eventually finds a potential boyfriend in the form of "Norman," a strange boy that her brother, thanks to a mysterious journal he found in the woods, believed to be a zombie. Annoyed by her brother's warnings and attempts to interfere, Mabel demands that he stay out of her business, and storms off to her date, only to find that "Norman" isn't a real human boy or a zombie (or a vampire) at all, but a band of gnomes dressed up as a person, who want to make her their queen. Mabel refuses them and they try to take her by force, and likely would have succeeded had Dipper not shown up in the Mystery Shack's golf cart to save the day. The twins escape, but the gnomes merge to form a giant MEGA-GNOME that chases after them, all the way back to the Mystery Shack. Trapped and with nowhere to run, Mabel agrees to go with the gnomes, a fact that Dipper protests vehemently, but Mabel assures him that everything will be okay by telling him, "For once, just trust me."
As the lead gnome goes to slip a ring on her finger, Mabel flicks on a leafblower hidden in a pile of leaves and promptly begins to use it to defeat the gnomes, sending them skittering back to the woods. Mabel sorrowfully admits that she should have listened to Dipper and the two share an awkward sibling hug and returned to the Shack. Stan, seeing that they seem down, offers them each a gift from the shop, claiming he "stocked too much inventory." While Dipper claims a hat to replace the one he lost during the gnome fight, Mabel claims... a grappling hook, which she uses with enthusiasm at any available opportunity.
In an attempt to bond with the children, Stan brings them to the lake on a fishing excursion, but the twins are more interested in the idea that there might be a lake monster, as Dipper plans to enter a monster photo contest and win $1000 to split between himself and his sister (Mabel plans to buy a human-sized hamster ball with her share). This leads to them abandoning Stan and leaving with Soos, the Mystery Shack's handyman, to track down the monster. Their trek leads them to an island in the middle of the lake, where they're alarmed to find that there's no monster at all, just some beavers, but as Dipper sinks into despair about their failed attempts, the monster rises from the lake and begins to chase them. They escape to the boat and try to flee across the lake, but are thwarted by a waterfall. Dipper tells Mabel, who is driving, that there's a cave behind the falls, according to his journal, and trusting him implicitly, Mabel drives the boat into the falls, as per his instruction. The monster pursues but is too big to fit into the cave and, delighted, Dipper snaps pictures of it. The monster's thrashing loosens some rocks from the cave and smashes into its head, revealing that it's mechanical and a closer inspection reveals that the "monster" is just a machine controlled by local cook Old Man McGucket, who was trying to get his son to notice him. Feeling guilty about leaving Stan after hearing the old man's story, the twins return to their Grunkle, contrite, apologetic, and eager to spend the rest of the day with him.
The twins eventually discover, through Soos, a collection of wax figures hidden away in a secret room of the Shack- leftovers from an exhibit that Stan had attempted years before and eventually discontinued. After Stan expresses dissatisfaction that one of his favorite figures has been melted, Mabel vows to make him a new one, though her initial ideas are rejected by Dipper for being "too far-fetched." After her brother suggests that she draw from real life, she decides to make a wax version of Stan- an eerily accurate version of Stan, actually. Delighted by Mabel's work, Stan announces the return of the wax museum and Mabel gleefully takes pride in her art at the first unveiling, though the scene turns sour when Stan's dishonesty causes dissatisfaction among the gathered audience. That night, wax Stan is mysteriously beheaded and Mabel is distraught about her work being besmirched (though Stan takes it way worse). After seeing that the cops won't take them seriously, Dipper decides to take matters into his own hands and he and Mabel try to solve the mystery themselves. Unfortunately, though they believe they've found the culprit through Holmesian deductive reasoning, they are proven wrong, and, dejected, return to the Shack where Stan is having a fake funeral for his wax doppelganger. After Stan runs out crying and Soos leaves to comfort him, Dipper notices that the wax Stan's feet resemble the footprints left on the shag carpet when wax Stan was murdered, and Mabel points out that all the wax figures have those, leading to the twins realizing that wax Stan was murdered by one of the statues. This is proven when they come alive, claiming that they're cursed and that they wish to seek revenge for Stan locking them up. The twins fight them off valiantly and as Dipper pursues wax Sherlock Holmes to the roof to defeat him by the light of the rising sun, Mabel tosses all the defeated wax figures into the fire. Now with wax Stan's head miraculously returned and the evil wax figures dispatched (aside from the head of wax Larry King, who is still living in the vents), the day is saved.
The twins learn about Stan's archrival Gideon Gleeful, who runs the Tent of Telepathy, and, through a loophole in Stan's rules about not going to see the show, Dipper and Mabel set out to see what all the fuss is about. What they get is a precocious nine-year-old who sings a catchy song and "allegedly" reads minds. He takes a particular shine to Mabel and goes as far as to go to the Shack, claiming he "can't get her out of his mind," and invites her to spend some time with him. Mabel, at first, delights in hanging out with Gideon as a friend, because Gideon likes "girly things" and she sees him as a "little sister," but things take a dark turn when Gideon begins asking her on dates and lavishing her with expensive gifts, making her uncomfortable and awkward around him. Unable to tell him no due to not wanting to destroy their friendship and feeling bad that she might hurt his feelings, Mabel becomes distraught, and Dipper offers to "break up" with Gideon for her. Unfortunately, Gideon takes this the entirely wrong way, refuses to believe that Mabel actually doesn't care for him in that way, and blames Dipper for trying to get in the way of them.
Still fraught with guilt about using Dipper to let Gideon down, Mabel decides she has to do the right thing and tell him, herself. Unfortunately, Gideon has already led Dipper into a trap and Mabel arrives just before Gideon murders her brother with a set of sheep shears. She's able to get close to him by pretending to want to still be his friend, but at the last second, she snatches the source of his power (his bolo tie), thus leaving him powerless, and begins to berate him for trying to kill her brother. In a rage, Gideon attacks Dipper again, causing them both to fall out the window and start plummeting to their doom, but Mabel saves both of them with the power of the bolo tie. Afterwards, she makes it perfectly clear that she will never, ever date Gideon and smashes the gem in the bolo tie, so that Gideon can no longer use his powers to hurt anyone. Gideon vows revenge, but the Pines family find his threats to be idle and spend some quality time making fun of him.
The twins are invited to hang out with Wendy (the cashier at the Mystery Shack that Dipper has a crush on) and her friends, after Dipper lies and says that he and Mabel are thirteen. The teens and the twins venture to an abandoned convenience store that's rumored to be haunted. While Dipper runs around trying to impress the older kids, Mabel pretty much does her own thing, and eventually stumbles upon a display of (banned) Smile Dip that she consumes greedily, and spends the entire episode hallucinating. This makes her a prime target for the ghosts haunting the store, who use her as a conduit with which to punish the teenagers for their transgressions. They stop when Dipper admits he isn't a teenager, and performs a cute dance to appease them. Mabel seems to have no recollection of her possession, though it may be because she was still very high on smile dip at the time. At any rate, after the kids are allowed to go free, she becomes violently ill and declares Smile Dip "evil."
While at the diner having breakfast one day, Stan's cheapness denies Mabel pancakes, and Dipper decides to win some for the family via a "manliness" tester in the back of the restaurant, prompting Stan and Mabel to tease him. When Dipper (of course) fails at it, he leaves in a huff, as his family continues to laugh at him. Figuring he'll be okay, Mabel turns her sights on her Grunkle Stan, who seems to have a crush on the proprietor of the diner, Lazy Susan. Once Stan admits it, Mabel makes it her mission to make him presentable enough to earn Lazy Susan's love, and uses Wendy and Soos to help her. Unfortunately, for all of Mabel's determination, Stan is resistant to being tamed into a new man. Not daunted, Mabel drags Stan to the diner and presents him to Lazy Susan as a "fixer upper," because she's always fixing things. This seems to be good enough for her and she gives Stan her number. MATCHmade. Or it would have been if Stan hadn't crapped out on her. Win some, lose some.
In an attempt to appeal to the youth of Gravity Falls, Stan throws a dance at the Shack, which Mabel believes is her opportunity to make new friends, while Dipper believes its the perfect chance to make a move on Wendy. Mabel cautions Dipper about overthinking his plan, but Dipper's giant checklist will not be ignored and, leaving her brother with all the rope he needs to hang himself, proceeds to do her own thing at the party.
Enthusiastically throwing herself into dancing and having fun, Mabel meets Candy and Grenda, two "social outcasts," who she finds to be silly and intriguing, even calling them "her people." When Soos announces that the best partier will win a crown, a blonde valley girl stereotype named Pacifica Northwest strolls in and demands the crown for herself, claiming no one will challenge her, and even taking potshots at Grenda and Candy. Unable to stand back and watch her new friends get tormented, Mabel challenges Pacifica and even tries to be civil towards her as she does it, but Pacifica won't have any of it. Undaunted, Mabel cheerfully proclaims "she's going down," and proceeds to enchant the entire party with her enthusiasm and natural charisma. At the end of the night, it seems Mabel is bound for glory, but she and Pacifica end up tying thanks to Pacifica intimidating the crowd into applauding for her. The tie is broken when, not wishing to lose, Pacifica bribes Old Man McGucket into giving her the extra applause she needs to win. Heartbroken, Mabel returns to Candy and Grenda, believing that they won't want to be friends with her, because she failed to beat Pacifica and protect their honor, but the girls are still impressed with Mabel's moxie, regardless of whether she wins or not, and ask to sleep over at the Shack and keep partying with her.
During Gravity Falls' annual Pioneer Day, Mabel's enthusiasm is once again pitted against Pacifica's rich bitch attitude (despite Mabel insisting that her rivalry with Pacifica is "water under the bridge") when she tries to participate in the opening ceremony and is shot down for being "too silly." Heartbroken, Mabel leaves with Dipper, who is determined to get back at Pacifica for hurting his sister's feelings. While searching his journal, he discovers that Pacifica's family, who founded the town, may be part of a cover-up conspiracy. Seeing this as a chance to prove she can be serious, Mabel joins Dipper on a quest to uncover the truth, using a coded page hidden inside the journal. While in the library, Dipper begins hunting through symbols to uncover one that will crack the code, while Mabel makes a paper hat out of the page. Realizing she's being silly again, she deflates, but Dipper notices that the way she's folded the page reveals that it's actually a map that leads them to the museum. Pursued by two bumbling cops who are trying to stop them from solving the mystery, they rush to the museum, where the map leads them to a strange painting. Frustrated with trying to figure it out, Mabel flops upside down on a bench and discovers that the painting has been hung upside down and is actually a depiction of an angel statue in the cemetery. Now fully on the right trail, the twins head that way.
The cemetery yields no new clues until Mabel, goofing off again, sticks the angel's pointing stone finger in her nose to pretend like she's picking it and accidentally releases a lever that unlocks a secret passageway into a bunker where they uncover a series of government conspiracies, including the fact that Nathaniel Northwest, Pacifica's ancestor, didn't found Gravity Falls at all. It was founded by the 8 1/2 President of the United States, who was so silly and ridiculous, his entire presidency was covered up after he fled the White House and landed in Gravity Falls. The twins find the man, himself, encased in peanut brittle inside the bunker, but before they can take their findings to rub them in Pacifica's face, the cops arrive (due to Mabel leaving a trail of candy wrappers) and abduct the children, the information, and Trembly's peanut-brittle-encased body onto a train bound for Washington DC.
Dejected and feeling like a complete failure for leading the cops to them, Mabel begins to stress-eat some of the peanut brittle, because she will eat just about anything, accidentally releasing Trembly, who is still alive thanks to... the restorative properties of peanut brittle. Mabel realizes that Trembly hasn't actually been as silly as people have said he was, and he points out that neither is she, because she was the one who solved the riddles he left behind (when serious people couldn't) and was able to free him from his "delicious tomb." With her and Trembly's "silliness combined," Mabel is able to free them from the shipping crate they're trapped in, and the twins escape onto the roof of the train, pursued by their captors. Through some quick thinking by Dipper and the fact that Trembly never formally resigned from office (thus the cops have to take orders from him), they're able to escape back to Gravity Falls. Trembly gives Dipper the "the president's key," which can open any lock in America, and makes Mabel a congressman (to which she replies she's "legalizing everything"), and rides off into the sunset. Backwards.
Satisfied that her silliness isn't bad at all, Mabel confronts Pacifica, though she still refuses to see any value in how Mabel behaves and dismisses her entirely, prompting Dipper to ask his sister why she didn't just give her the paperwork that would expose her family as a fraud. Showing maturity, Mabel proclaims that she doesn't have to prove anything to Pacifica to make herself feel better. This doesn't satisfy Dipper who gleefully runs after Pacifica to rub it in her face on his own merits. There are two kinds of people....
Stan throws together a cheap fair to (once again) make more money. During the fair, Dipper sees his chance to hang out with Wendy, taking Mabel's advice about not overthinking it and just going for it. Unfortunately, Robbie (Dipper's romantic rival for Wendy's affections) shows up, leading Dipper to need to keep him away from Wendy so as not to ruin his day with her. Mabel offers to help, but immediately gets distracted by a "WIN A PIG" sign. By guessing the pig's weight correctly, she wins him and proclaims that "everything is different now." Now with her pig (Waddles) in tow, she finds out that Dipper's attempts to win Wendy a stuffed animal have backfired dramatically, leading her right into Robbie's waiting arms. Dipper becomes distraught, and turns his anger on a mysterious bald man that he blames for the Wendy disaster. The bald man, Blendin Blandin, is actually a time traveler tasked with dealing with time anomalies, and he believes this particular moment in time is full of them. Unable to figure out where the anomalies are, he's become stressed and anxious and Mabel offers him tickets to the fair in order to calm him down. While he's distracted, Dipper steals Blendin's time travel device and uses it to take him back to the moment things went wrong with Wendy. Unfortunately, every time he tries it, something else goes wrong, until finally he realizes that in order for things to go right, he needs Mabel with him. At long last, Dipper succeeds in impressing Wendy, but Mabel arrives too late to win Waddles, losing him to Pacifica, and, heartbroken, she begs Dipper to go back to the start again. When he refuses, the two of them fight, accidentally sending themselves back to pioneer days, where Mabel, in a fit of pettiness and frustration, blatantly disregards Dipper's warnings about not messing with the past and shows the pioneers calculators and tells the women they'll eventually be able to vote.
The two of them continue to fight their way through several time jumps, eventually landing back in the timeline where Mabel fails to win Waddles and, once again, Mabel pleads with Dipper to let her try again, because Waddles is her "soulmate." Dipper protests that she said that about a ball of yarn and that this is merely a passing fancy and tries to prove it by going forward in the timeline, only to discover that Mabel is still mourning Waddles months later. Distressed by his sister's sorrow, Dipper goes back to the start and loses Wendy to Robbie, so that Mabel can have her pig, which she is exceedingly grateful for. Their actions, however, have negative consequences for Blendin, who vows revenge as he's carted away by mysterious time cops. I'm sure nothing will come of that.
Mabel realizes that Stan seems to have an irrational fear of heights when he vehemently protests the use of a ladder to reach a shelf, and proves it when she gives him a pair of high heels for "Great Uncle's Day" and then goads him a bit until he admits he's scared. Determined to cure him of his fear (because she feels it is her lifeblood to make people happy and solve their problems), Mabel tricks Stan into taking a trip with her (complete with blindfold), and leads him up to the Gravity Falls water tower, where he proceeds to mildly freak out. What could have been a very simple (and horrifying) adventure turns even worse when local punk Robbie V, chased by a video game fighter that Dipper summoned, follows the pair of them up to the water tower, which makes the tower the perfect target for the violent fighter. Mabel and Stan end up stuck up there on a wobbly death trap while Dipper and Robbie deal with the fighter, but manage to survive the ordeal. Seeing that he lived through uncertain height-related death, Stan's fear is cured, but, unfortunately, the trauma of everything gives Mabel a fear of heights.
After discovering that Mabel is exactly one millimeter taller than him (and having to deal with the subsequent torment from her because of it), Dipper goes to extraordinary lengths to make himself taller by using a growing/shrinking crystal he found in the woods and fastened onto a flashlight. Once Mabel finds out about it, the twins fight over possession of it, alerting the attention of Gideon, who manages to steal it away from them and use it to shrink the twins to doll-size and place them in a jar, hoping to extort them for ransom so that Stan will hand over the deed to the Mystery Shack. Stan fails to believe Gideon's claims, however, and Gideon decides to just shrink him and steal the deed that way. He leaves Mabel and Dipper in his room, guarded by a guinea pig that's too stupid to be an actual watchdog, and the twins manage to escape. They're caught again, however, because, after successfully getting the flashback away from Gideon, they stopped to argue about who would be taller when they finished using it. Trapped in a jar again and with no real way to help Stan, Mabel admits that she's been giving Dipper a hard time about being short, because she was finally better at him than something, because he's good at everything and usually rubs her nose in it. The twins make up and escape the jar, defeating Gideon with a successful tickle attack and some help from an unwitting Stan, who thinks Gideon's just lost his mind. Once the flashlight is secured, the twins regrow themselves to proper height and Dipper even lets Mabel keep her extra millimeter. Aw.
The twins learn that Gravity Falls celebrates Halloween twice a year with a special "Summerween" at the end of June. Mabel is thrilled, because she and Dipper have always gotten lots of candy due to being twins with matching costumes, but Dipper (who, at first, was as happy as Mabel was) becomes less thrilled with the idea when he gets invited to a party with Wendy and the older kids. He fakes being sick to avoid trick-or-treating, but before anyone can be convinced of his act, the doorbell rings and a strange figure appears, asking for candy. Agitated, Dipper accuses the person of being too old for trick-or-treating and slams the door in his face, only to discover that he has invoked the wrath of the Summerween Trickster, a demonic being that eats children who "don't have the Halloween spirit." To prove his identity, the Trickster eats an adorable child in front of them and then tells them that if they don't collect 500 pieces of candy before the last Jack-O-Melon goes out, they, too, will be devoured.
This forces Dipper to accompany Mabel, Candy, Grenda, and Soos on their trick or treating excursion, though, at first, he tries to get candy without putting on his costume. Mabel convinces him otherwise and the two proceed to rake in candy with their adorable peanut butter and jelly costumes. As the night wears on, the kids finally collect nearly enough candy, and the girls run off to get a few more pieces, leaving Dipper with the wheelbarrow. Mabel comes back and overhears Dipper talking to Wendy and realizes that Dipper's lack of enthusiasm and attempts to rush them were all because he wanted to ditch her for the older kids (ON THEIR FAVORITE HOLIDAY D:). Mabel's anger becomes even more justified when she realizes that, in an attempt to hide what he's been doing all evening, Dipper accidentally tossed the wheelbarrow into a stream. With no more time to collect the right amount of candy, the Trickster appears to collect his debt and begins chasing the children. They take refuge in the Summerween superstore, where Mabel, still angry and hurt by Dipper's actions, explains that she's concerned about them growing up and not having "many Halloweens left," especially since Dipper wants to grow up much faster than she does. Her words strike a chord with Dipper, but the Trickster is their biggest concern, and so they decide to try and sneak out using the costumes to conceal themselves. They might have succeeded, however, had Soos not become enraptured with an animatronic skeleton and alerted the Trickster to their whereabouts. The Trickster descends on them, devouring Soos first, and the kids use prop weapons to attack him in attempt to save themselves. As they hack away at him, they realize that the Trickster is made out of discarded candy and seeks vengeance on the children who deemed him not worthy. During his monologue, Soos eats his way out of the Trickster's stomach, which kills the monster, who "only wanted someone to think he was delicious." Thoroughly traumatized but otherwise okay, the kids leave the store, only to run into Wendy, who asks where Dipper's been. He proudly explains that he was trick-or-treating with his sister, which brightens Mabel's night, and the kids return to the Shack to celebrate their victory.
During a routine day of business at the Shack, Mabel is pulled off register duty by Stan for giving away things for free, despite her cheerful and friendly customer service attitude. The two argue about politeness (Mabel is all about it and Stan is disgusted by it), but Stan refuses to relent. Realizing than Stan has been cold, bossy, rude, and inconsiderate of Dipper, Soos, and Wendy, too, Mabel confronts him and he suggests a wager- if she can make more money running the Shack in three days than he can on vacation, then she can run the Shack permanently (and he has to sing a song about losing), but if he wins, she has to wear a "loser" shirt. Mabel gleefully accepts the terms, despite Dipper's wariness since Stan is a professional con man and will likely cheat.
Mabel embraces her new position with gusto (and shoulderpads!), and begins to work to make the Shack more friendly for her employees, including letting Soos be the Shack's mascot, sending Dipper out to hunt a real monster for an attraction, and letting Wendy hang out with her friends on duty. However, Mabel's generosity and refusal to boss anyone around in order to avoid being like Stan leads to her being walked all over, and, after a point, she ends up running the Shack herself. Things turn even worse when Dipper's monster gets loose (due to Mabel giving it a key for a "break," because it's "technically an employee") and runs rampant in the Shack. Together, Mabel and Dipper are able to drive it back into the forest, leaving them with only a day to make their quota and get the Shack back into working order, and, sadly, no one will cooperate with Mabel. Desperate and infuriated because everyone has been taking advantage of her, Mabel finally snaps and begins ordering people around, which, at first, utterly distresses her, but Dipper assures her it's for the best and she spends the final day barking orders, and returning the Shack to its former glory. Despite making a ton of money, however, the repairs to the Shack wiped them out of everything save a dollar.
Stan returns from vacation, claiming that he won $300,000 on a game show, but lost it all after trying to double his money and failing because he didn't know the word "please." (apparently it CAN make you money) As Mabel is technically the winner, Stan is prepared to hand the Shack over to her, but she refuses, claiming that she now understands why he has to be tough on his employees. She still makes him sing a "Stan is Wrong" song, though.
Stan's latest scheme involves teaching a bear how to drive, and when the cops investigate the matter, Stan produces an elaborate lie about needing a "seeing eye bear" to drive him to appointments, which sets Mabel off, because she dislikes his dishonesty. Determined to make Stan tell the truth, she borrows Dipper's journal and uncovers a set of "truth-telling teeth" that when worn prevent the person from ever telling a lie. Under the cover of darkness, she places them in Stan's mouth and is, at first, delighted by his newfound honesty, until Stan's rampant truth-telling becomes uncomfortable for both her and Dipper, and, ultimately, leads to Stan nearly getting arrested. Mabel lies for him, against her better judgment, and she and Dipper get rid of the teeth- Mabel even goes as far as to lock them into a box and throw them into the bottomless pit.
On the hottest day of the year, the Pines family heads to the local pool to cool down, where Mabel's attention is drawn to a handsome boy hanging off alone in the pool. Soos explains that he's always there and that he's a "mysterious loner," and Mabel is 100% into that. She approaches him enthusiastically and seems to be charming him with her boldness, but when she asks if he'd like to leave the pool to get snacks, he clams up and shies away from her, saying he has a terrible secret. Mabel's upset, but intrigued, and brings him a sandwich as a peace offering, desperate to learn his secrets, and the boy, still a little fuckstruck by her, relents and tells her he's a merman (named Mermando), which delights Mabel to no end. The two spend the day together and Mabel promises to come back that night to see him after the pool closes.
Mabel brings her scrapbook to show him (accidentally being insensitive about the fact that Mermando HAS NO LEGS BECAUSE HE IS A MERMAN), which makes him homesick for his own family, as he's been separated from them for quite a long time, and can't seem to escape the pool. The next day, he's still depressed, and Mabel decides to make it her personal mission to make certain he's reunited with them. She breaks into the pool that night with the intention of smuggling Mermando out in a cooler (after rejecting her original, complicated plan involving making prosthetic limbs out of fishsticks), but is stopped by Dipper, who is the acting night watchman for the pool, trying desperately to impress his boss, so he can keep his job as assistant lifeguard and hang out with Wendy (who is working as a lifeguard). Knowing that losing pool supplies will get him fired, Dipper pursues Mabel all the way to the lake, where she finally confesses that she is trying to save Mermando's life. Sadly, the pursuit caused the water to leak out of the cooler and Mermando is now suffocating, prompting Mabel to insist Dipper do "reverse CPR" on him, despite the fact that they could have just... rolled him into the lake (a fact Mermando points out when he returns to life). Together, the twins return Mermando to the lake and, reluctantly, Dipper sacrifices the pool's megaphone to Mermando (so that his family can hear him calling for them), knowing that losing it will mean losing his job and any chance of hanging out at the pool with Wendy all summer.
Mabel and Mermando share a heartfelt goodbye that ends in Mabel getting her first kiss, which, though exciting, doesn't soothe her broken heart... At least until she starts getting bottles with letters in them from Mermando, detailing his gratitude for her saving him and reuniting him with his family, and promising more bottles and letters to come.
After a sleepover that leaves Dipper harried and irritated about his living arrangements with Mabel, the twins have a full-on fight that culminates into them deciding they need separate rooms. As luck would have it, Soos finds an extra room that had been boarded up- a room with a mysterious (and hideous) carpet in it. Dipper tries to claim the room for himself, but Mabel insists she should get it and Stan takes advantage of their bickering by proclaiming that whichever twin sucks up to him the most will get the room. And so Dipper and Mabel begin a war to win Stan's favor and eventually end up confronting one another in the room. As they circle each other on the carpet, they activate it through use of static electricity and accidentally switch bodies, causing both of them to massively freak out. The twins realize that being in each others' bodies means they can sabotage the other's attempt to win the room, and they throw themselves into the act with gusto.... Until Candy and Grenda arrive and drag Dipper!Mabel into a sleepover. Mabel!Dipper, trying desperately to see what she's missing, gets caught by Stan who mistakes her desperation for a young boy having "urges" and he proceeds to teach her about puberty, which thoroughly traumatizes her. Unfortunately, this also leads to Stan deciding to give Dipper the room, despite Mabel's continued attempts to sabotage him. With a heavy heart, she goes to give Dipper the news and, then, in a final act of defiance, locks Dipper (still in her body) out of the room. Seeking vengeance, Dipper appeals to Candy and Grenda to give "Dipper" a makever. The resulting confrontation in the room causes a series of bodyswaps until finally everyone is returned to normal, and Stan steals the carpet away to throw it out, seemingly unaware of its magical properties. That night, Mabel and Dipper spend the night alone in their separate rooms and realize they miss each other, leading to Dipper dragging his things back up to the attic for a "sleepover." In the end, they choose to remain in the attic together.
Mabel and her friends attempt to go see famous boy band Sev'ral Timez, but arrive too late to get tickets. Refusing to back down because she promised her friends they'd see the band, Mabel, Grenda, and Candy break into the theater and sneaks into the dressing room, where they discover that the boys are actually clones and that their manager keeps them locked in a giant hamster cage. The girls agree that the boys deserve freedom and abduct them to the Mystery Shack, intending to release them into "the wild," but their manager comes looking for them, forcing them to stay put. During this time, Mabel becomes attached to them as she tries to teach them how to be "human," much to Candy and Grenda's displeasure, who feel that Mabel is becoming possessive and won't be able to let them go when the time comes. Once their manager has been arrested, Candy and Grenda attempt to tell the boys the news, but Mabel stops them and lies about their manager still being out there, even going as far as to sic them on her friends in order to keep them with her, completely unaware that she's become as bossy, demanding, and dehumanizing as their manager. Once the boys sing Mabel a song proclaiming their gratitude for her, Mabel realizes how cruel she's been and, consumed with guilt, admits that she lied and that she has to let them go now. She makes peace with Candy and Grenda and, together, they send Sev'ral Timez off into the woods, while Candy remarks that they won't last a week. Mabel seems to either have faith otherwise or a strong conviction it's for the best either way, because she accepts this.
While Stan is out giving tours, Mabel has a mini dance party with Waddles in the gift shop and falls asleep on the floor cuddling her beloved pig, because she's adorable. Upon Stan's return, he shows disdain for Waddles and orders him outside, much to Mabel's displeasure, who protests that he could get hurt outside and he belongs inside with her. She huffs off with her pig to watch TV where she sees a commercial for the Huggy Wuvvy Tummy Bundle, a baby carrier THAT WORKS FOR PIIIIIIGS. Eager to obtain one, Mabel goes to Stan and begs him to watch Waddles, because while he doesn't like her pig, he loves her, and because of that he should be willing to protect and watch over Waddles. Satisfied with Stan's promise that he won't put Waddles outside, Mabel rides off to buy her Huggy Wuvvy Tummy Bundle.
When Mabel returns, she finds Stan, Dipper, and Soos standing around awkwardly with Waddles missing. Stan attempts to placate her by offering her a puppy, but Soos blurts out that Waddles "was eaten by a pterodactyl," which causes Mabel to panic and questions Stan about whether or not he'd left Waddles outside. Stan, while acting VERY suspicious, proceeds to tell her that Waddles was taken from him by the pterodactyl, after he viciously tried to fight it off on his own and failed. Mabel believes every word of this, and Dipper declares that no pterodactyl messes with his sister and the group sets off on a journey to see if they can find Waddles (though Stan is reluctant). Unfortunately, they don't have any leads until Mabel realizes that Waddles' sweater is unraveling and they can follow the yarn to where the dinosaur took him.
The yarn leads them to an abandoned building where they meet Old Man McGucket, who tells them that the dinosaur flew into the abandoned mines through a hole in the floor. They descend into the cavern with McGucket following, telling them weird, personal stories, but the rope breaks and they all end up falling into the mines with no way out. Fortunately, the mines have been overgrown with strange jurassic plant life, and the foliage breaks their fall. With no way to go but into the mines, the group continues on until they find a bunch of dinosaurs encased in tree sap, revealing that the pterodactyl must have broken free from its sticky prison due to the summer heat melting the sap, and that's why it's running amok in Gravity Falls. Stan is delighted by this finding, believing he can make money off of it, and accidentally reveals that he did leave Waddles outside, which Mabel overhears. Realizing that he lied to her and that it's his fault that her pig might be dead, Mabel vows to never speak to him again. Trying to stop the fighting, Soos points out that they can still find Waddles because they have the yarn trail, but in his enthusiasm, he accidentally ruins the trail, leaving the group with several different mine shafts and no way of knowing which one is the one they should follow. This upsets Dipper, who has been growing increasingly frustrated with Soos for this entire trip, and with all four of them arguing, they don't notice that the pterodactyl has come up behind them until McGucket (who is still here) points it out.
The pterodactyl chases them down a shaft, leading them to its nest. Stan tries to get Mabel to help with a plan to distract the dinosaur, so they can escape, but she's still stubbornly refusing to acknowledge him, even though they all need to work together to get out of this situation. The arguing begins anew, but its cut short when Mabel hears Waddles oinking and realizes that he's in the pterodactyl's nest across a rickety bridge from them. With no regard for her personal safety, Mabel runs after him, ignoring the protests from Stan and the others. Reuinted with her pig, she doesn't notice that the nest is housing a ton of skeletons, despite Dipper desperately trying to call her attention to it. After securing Waddles in his Huggy Wuvvy Tummy Bundle, Waddles becomes frightened by the pterodactyl returning and tries to flee, running into Stan in the process. The two of them plummet into the cavern below, leaving the kids, Soos, and McGucket to figure out a way to save them. Dipper suggests that McGucket use one of his inventions, but the old cook has nothing available to him, so that's what you get for asking a crazy hillbilly for help. Just then, the egg in the nest hatches, revealing a baby pterodactyl, which is cute for approximately six seconds until it swallows McGucket whole (he escapes later by eating his way out of its stomach- ew). Soos suggests that to escape the baby, they have to get into a straight line, because the pterodactyl's eyes are so far apart, it won't be able to see them. At first, Dipper protests this as crazy talk, but eventually relents, and the three of them cross the rickety bridge to the other side without alerting the baby pterodactyl.
Suddenly, the big pterodactyl emerges from the depths of the cavern with Stan on its back, fighting it (and carrying Waddles in the baby carrier), much to Mabel's delight. Stan manages to defeat the pterodactyl and return Waddles to Mabel, which turns her feelings around, because Stan risked his neck to save her pig for her. The heartfelt moment is interrupted by the pterodactyl returning, dazed, but still fighting mad, and the group escapes through the mine shaft with the dinosaur in hot pursuit. They escape by using the geysers in the bottom of the shaft to shoot them back up into the building they found the entrance to the mines in, liberating themselves from dinosaur hell. Outside, Mabel is utterly amazed by Stan's bravery and he confesses that he couldn't have his favorite niece not speaking to him, so he did what he had to do, and the two of them (and Waddles) ride home in the back seat of the truck, napping, cuddling, and closer than ever. Aww.
Gideon continues to be up to his old tricks, including, but not limited to, commercials claiming that his Tent o' Telepathy will be moving to the Mystery Shack's location, and increasingly desperate plans to steal the deed to the Shack from under Stan's nose. When his plans continue to fail, he resorts to desperate measures- a desperate measure that Mabel and Soos just so happen to overhear. They watch from the bushes as Gideon summons a mysterious and powerful demon named Bill Cipher and sends him to steal the code to Stan's safe by invading his mind. Mabel and Soos rush to warn Dipper about this (and find a spell in the journal that will allow them to follow Bill into Stan's mind), though Dipper is reluctant, due to feeling like Stan has been mistreating him lately, and only relents when Mabel points out that they can't let Gideon get the Shack.
Dipper recites the incantation and the three of them arrive in the black and white and vaguely creepy world of Stan's mind, where they meet Bill outside of the mindscape version of the Shack. Immediately, Mabel attempts to tackle the demon and is sucked briefly into a pocket dimension and emerges three seconds later, unaware that any time had passed. Bill taunts them, calling them by monikers, rather than their names (Mabel is "Shooting Star"), and explains his evil plan to them, believing that they can't beat him, because he is "a master of the mind." Mabel protests this by claiming that no one can guess what she's thinking and Bill promptly proves her wrong by summoning Xyler and Craz, two characters from one of Mabel's favorite movies, which delights her. (To the point where she insists they come with them as they pursue Bill through a hall of endless doors that house Stan's memories to find the one of him inputting the code.)
As the group desperately quests for the right door, Mabel realizes that to find this one memory, they'll have to think like Stan and that knowing where Stan would hide something important in the Shack is how they'll find the memory. Soos points out that Stan hides his arrest warrants under the rug in the gift shop, and they find the equivalent rug in the mindscape, which hides a trapdoor leading to the memory. Knowing they have to destroy it to keep Bill from it, Soos offers to help, using some sort of strange telekinesis to pull the door from the floor, which is... a bit weird. What makes it weirder is... the real Soos shows up, having been separated from them some time ago. The Soos with the memory of the code transforms into Bill, who taunts the group more for being gullible and foolish and leaves to inform Gideon of his findings. Dipper, who had wandered off to find out what Stan really thinks of him, arrives and Mabel and Soos beg him to help them get the memory back from Bill, but Dipper refuses, believing that Stan hates him and that he no longer wants to help him. Infuriated by her brother's disregard for Stan and the Shack, Mabel takes her sparkly boys and Soos to beat Bill herself.
...Which she does by using a Nyarf dart gun to shoot the memory into another memory of the bottomless pit (just go with it), thus losing it forever, and causing Gideon to break his deal with Bill. Bill is infuriated by this and becomes a fucking Eldritch horror who kills Xyler and Craz and forces Mabel and Soos to live their worst nightmares (Mabel's is, apparently losing her cuteness, as Bill turns her into a hideous troll). Just when things look bleak, Dipper arrives, revealing that he learned the truth about Stan's feelings for him (he's trying to toughen him up) and also learned a few things about the mindscape- anything they dream, they can do. Mabel's response to this is to give herself kitten fists, hamster ball shields, and resurrects Xyler and Craz to torture Bill with synthesized music. Just when the gang is about to defeat Bill, he obliterates the warzone, leaving the group in a void, where he says that he was testing them and that they might come in handy one day. He gives them a cryptic warning and departs. Stan wakes up, evicting Mabel, Soos, and Dipper from his mind (alas Mabel must leave Xyler and Craz to her dreams). Satisfied about their victory, the family shares a moment, but it's cut short when Gideon blows up the safe with dynamite and steals the deed to the Shack, claiming it as his own.
The Pines family have now moved in with Soos and his grandmother while they helplessly watch as Gideon destroys their home and mocks them about it on live TV. Dipper is utterly discouraged by this turn of events, but Mabel remains optimistic that they can still turn it around and decides to take up the mantle of hero of the family, using her... Grappling hook, which Dipper points out has never actually solved any of their problems.
The Pines family and Soos sneak onto the grounds of the Shack during a press conference Gideon is having, using elaborate disguises, so they can find out his plans for the Shack. Unable to handle that Gideon plans to turn their home into an amusement park and the fact that he's turned Waddles into a pompadour-wearing mascot, Mabel, Dipper, and Stan storm the stage to out Gideon as a fraud and a thief. However, the crowd sides with Gideon and they are unceremoniously thrown out. With hope lost, and Stan unable to care for the kids without the Shack, he decides to send them home, presenting them with bus tickets and telling them that their bus will be leaving at sundown the next day. Not wanting to leave, Mabel and Dipper devise a plan to use the gnomes (Mabel is, understandably, reluctant) as an army against Gideon, bribing them by telling them Gideon is a girl and will be their queen, since they're... not over Mabel yet. This plan almost succeeds until Gideon uses a dog whistle to bring the gnomes to his command and sics them on Dipper and Mabel, taking the journal from Dipper in the process.
Without his journal, Dipper loses all hope at being able to beat Gideon, despite Mabel protesting that he doesn't need it, but he refuses to listen, because he took Gideon's taunts about his ability and strength coming from the journal and not from him to heart. Unable to figure out what to do and with heavy hearts, the twins board the bus to return to Piedmont. Fortunately/Unfortunately, Gideon only has two of the three journals and is missing the first one, and he suspects that Dipper has it, prompting him to chase after the twins' bus in a giant robot that looks like him. The twins appeal to the bus driver to stop and realize that the driver is Soos, who has had to take odd jobs due to not being able to work in the Shack anymore. A dramatic chase ensues, culminating in them getting trapped at the edge of a cliff, where the Gideonbot rips the roof off the bus and the twins escape on foot across the train tracks below, which, unfortunately, is a dead end. The Gideonbot corners them, demanding to know where Journal #1 is, but the twins have no idea what he's talking about, so it grabs them both, and Gideon taunts Dipper about not being a hero and tosses him aside, abducting Mabel with him, as he still plans on her being his queen once he finds the last journal and unlocks ultimate power. Enraged by his sister's abduction, Dipper leaps onto the robot and manages to get inside, where he and Gideon engage in a brutal fight. The Gideonbot plummets off the tracks and Mabel saves herself and Dipper using her grappling hook.
The entire town comes out to see what the fuss is about and as Gideon protests his innocence, Stan arrives with proof of Gideon being a sham- the "little psychic" is actually just spying on the town through the use of buttons he's given everyone, and that's how he allegedly reads minds. Gideon is arrested, Dipper gets his journal back, and the Shack returns to its rightful owner.
After getting the Shack back and everything returning to normal (even down to the mold on the attic ceiling that Mabel has named Daryl for some reason), Dipper and Mabel agree to finally tell Stan about what they've discovered about Gravity Falls, but he dismisses everything they've said as crazy talk, but borrows the journal from Dipper, anyway, claiming he can use it to come up with some good attractions for the Shack. Dipper protests, but Mabel, once again, points out that he didn't need it to defeat Gideon and he's a hero in his own right. Even still, Dipper is eager to have it back, but Mabel reassures him that there's no way a "boring old man" like Stan would want to keep that journal for long.
With the Shack saved and reopened to the public, and the Pines family hailed as heroes by the whole town, there's no better way to celebrate than with a party. Mabel's high hopes primarily involve karaoke and performing a song with her family, much to Stan and Dipper's immediate displeasure. Dipper finally gets his journal back from Stan and rushes Mabel up to the attic where they can discuss the journals in private- or rather, where Dipper can rant about not being very close to solving any of the mysteries of Gravity Falls, while Mabel stares at him. She points out that he's looked at it a bazillion times and that there's nothing left to discover, since half of the pages are actually blank. Dipper refuses to relent, however, and Mabel teases him to try and get him to mellow out. At that moment, the Shack is visited by two FBI agents who are looking into the mysteries of Gravity Falls. Dipper is eager to show them his findings, but Stan dismisses him as a crazy kid (due to his not believing in the supernatural), leaving him desperate to prove himself to the agents. Mabel points out that Stan has a point and that maybe he should try being a normal kid, instead of searching for aliens or raising the dead (to which he says he WILL NOT RAISE THE DEAD), and that he should be focusing on karaoke and the party that night.
At the party, Mabel's infectious enthusiasm reigns supreme for everyone but Stan and Dipper, as she flits about spreading cheer and delight. Unfortunately, it all goes sour WHEN DIPPER RAISES THE DEAD TO PROVE HIMSELF TO THE AGENTS, and the zombies descend upon the party, prompting Mabel to give Dipper the YOU HAD ONE JOB speech, because she JUST WANTED A NICE NIGHT. WAS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK. Mabel, Dipper, and Soos fight off the zombies as best they can, but Soos gets bitten and becomes a zombie, himself, leaving the twins to fight them alone. They finally barricade themselves in the Shack, but Soos, still with human intelligence, ruins this by breaking into the fusebox and cutting the power. Trapped and helpless, the zombies grab Dipper, prepared to eat him, sending Mabel into a panic, but at the last second they are saved by Stan, who violently fights his way through the zombies with the skill of a professional. He and the twins escape to the attic, where Stan admits that he's always known about the supernatural and that he lied about knowing to protect the kids from it, hoping to discourage Dipper from pursuing the secrets of the town and getting in trouble.
The zombies are still swarming and the journal seems to think that they have no weaknesses, but while using a blacklight as a lamp to see in the dark, Mabel notices that the light illuminates writing on the journal that was written in invisible ink, revealing all new messages that Dipper hadn't even known about. The invisible ink reveals that zombies can be defeated by a three part harmony and Mabel realizes that NOW IT'S HER TIME TO SHINE. She drags the boys out onto the roof where they perform a song for the zombies together, devastating the horde with the power of karaoke and family. Afterwards, Dipper apologizes to Mabel and Stan for ruining the party, but Mabel protests that nothing could top getting to sing karaoke with her two favorite people in the world, proving, once again, that she always looks on the bright side.
Stan warns the twins about the dangers of the town and begs them to be careful and not go looking for trouble- a promise Dipper has no intention of keeping. Now with a ton of zombie damage to clean up, they realize they forgot about Soos (who missed the karaoke party due to being distracted as he do and is still a zombie). Fortunately, the journal has a cure for zombification and the twins go off to fix him, AND ALL IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD.
Maybe.
And then Mabel arrives in Wonderland.
Abilities/Special Powers:
Mabel is a normal twelve-year-old girl. However, she is known to punch and kick things extremely hard for a girl her size, and is capable of standing up to monsters and other things as best she can. She is a fearless little thing, for the most part.
Also cuteness. Her super power is definitely cuteness. And, apparently, she is a knitting master, which is not a superpower, but she will always have a sweater for every occasion and that is something to be proud of. She can even wear sweaters in the summer comfortably.
Third-Person Sample:
Honestly, at first, Mabel believes it to be a combination of cinnamon and formaldehyde giving her weird hallucinations. Who knew that a de-zombification bath could be so potent? She rubs her eyes and squints, stomach churning from the nasty smells that will probably linger forever in that corner of the woods.
"Hngh." Smile Dip can't be worse than this. She rocks back and forth and closes her eyes tightly, breathing through her mouth for a moment, and then opens her eyes again. Nope. Still not the Shack. Still just a beach, sans Soos, sans Dipper, and sans that cinnamon-and-dead-people smell.
Weird.
She gets to her feet slowly, and looks around. "Dipper?" He's nowhere to be seen. The world suddenly seems very big and very lonely, and the fog over her brain lifts with the realization. "Dipper!" She runs down the beach, trips once, and then keeps running. "Dipper, where are you? This isn't funny!"
She stops running, because she's actually had a very exhausting night, and too much running is not good for her tiny little body, even with as athletic as she is. Definitely too much weirdness. And karaoke will not make this go away, and bring her back to the Shack. At least, she doesn't think so... And, anyway, she doesn't have that rental karaoke machine, anyway.
"I can only handle so much weirdness in one day, bro. And the zombies were it. Just 'cause you have a whole new set of creepy things to gawk at in your journal doesn't mean you get to break reality! DO YOU HEAR ME?!" She figures yelling at Dipper will cow him into coming out and explaining himself to her out of guilt, but nothing emerges. It's just her on this beach.
Tears sting at the corners of her eyes. She can look at the best in everything. She's always been good at that. She's positive that she's capable of finding something great to focus on here if this isn't some weird nightmare, but the fact is... she almost lost Dipper tonight. That fear is too close to her heart right now, and it takes all the hope out of her for one, brief moment.
"Just come out here, Dip. Please."
